2026 In Living Color
"it's a crummy commercial..."
My family has several shorthand phrases that collectively convey meaning among us. Anyone who is familiar with A Christmas Story, the 1983 movie that takes a nostalgic look at the Parker family making their sometimes-bumpy way through the holiday season in the late 1930s, will remember Ralphie feverishly dialing his decoder ring for a secret message while his parents pound on the bathroom door — “the only place a young boy can be alone…” Sadly, the vital message is nothing more than Drink your Ovaltine — Ralphie is crushed, “it’s a crummy commercial.” Which is why a shorthand language comes in handy rather than having to explain source, subject and context. Without fail, we say “Fra-gee-lay” when gifts are opened. And let’s not forget the choice “Flick? Flick who?”
I digress. “Oh, fudge…” I guess I’m not terribly comfortable with marketing. Thank you to anyone who is still reading this strange Labor Day missive whose eyes haven’t glazed over by now. This is indeed a commercial, although I dearly hope it’s one for a product that will enrich your life.
2026 In Living Color
This year is my fifth circle around the sun producing the 2026 In Living Color Calendar, and while I joke about and lament my coming days as a one-woman postoffice, sending calendars out into every corner of the world thrills me. Sharing a calendar feels like we’re walking our days together. For those of you who may be new to this project, here’s a first look at next year’s version.
With 12 unique botanical color study images, accompanied by seasonal thoughts and markers, these limited-edition print calendars are a celebration of color in the natural world and an encouragement to pay attention to every passing moment.
A calendar and a keepsake postcard collection in one, the 12 pages (+ cover) are loose, unbound, 5- by 7-inch sheets printed on durable 18 pt. paper. Display on a desktop photo easel or hang on the wall using a humble binder clip. As each month is over, simply trim along the guideline to create a postcard or small print that will add a little color to someone’s world.
With gift season approaching, this is a gentle reminder that calendars are perfect to share with everyone on your list, including teachers, babysitters, neighbors and loved ones.

True, it's a crummy commercial, but having viewed it more than once, I ordered a calendar for my daughter.
