Invent new colors.
I collect the names of colors like others collect teacups or stamps. Naming expands and specifics our perception of color. Naming puts us in a conversation with others. For instance, if I say “orange,” we both probably picture an orange that is the color of an orange. But if you say “peach,” “apricot,” “tangerine,” or “pumpkin,” all of a sudden you’ve helped me to “see” various expressions of what is still basically orange.
