Hello!

I’m Lorene Edwards Forkner, a gardener who writes and a writer who gardens, and I’m always exploring the wonders of the natural world. Oh, and I talk about color. A lot. I mean like really a lot! I’m also the author of Color In and Out of the Garden, a compilation of nearly 100 color studies and short essays.

Why subscribe?

Subscribers to a handmade garden receive a weekly round up of color studies and observations. Also, once a month I’ll include seasonal ramblings, recent writing, book recommendations, information about upcoming classes and workshops, and special discount offers for goods in my store and online classes. All subscribers get first dibs on any new work or products in my online store.

I love the community that’s grown around my #seeingcolorinthegarden practice on Instagram, and I will continue to post there @gardenercook, but I think we can all agree, email is a much quieter space, free from the vagaries of a sometimes-quixotic algorithm. Now you can get all the colors and observations and connection directly in your inbox. Of course you can read my posts here on Substack, but subscribing is the only way to be notified of new posts.

a handmade garden emails are free, although when you upgrade to a paid subscription ($5/mo or $60/year) you’ll unlock additional benefits like:

  • Subscriber only content

  • Full access to archived posts

  • A growing library of resources, including seasonal content, project, recipes, information about my favorite paints and materials, and more.

Founding members ($150/year) receive all of this and a thank you gift from my online store. Everyone, free or otherwise, gets my eternal gratitude.

Subscription fees also help subsidize in-person lectures and workshops for organizations operating on limited budgets, which allows me to share gardens and color with as many folks as possible.
